## Key takeaways

- Most problems come from a **full or clogged filter**, **slick tracks**, **algae-slick walls** or a **cable/charger issue**.
- Check the **basket and intake first**: it fixes weak suction, slow cleaning and early stops.
- A robot that won't climb is often a **wet, algae-covered wall** or worn tracks, not a motor fault.
- If it's under warranty, **contact the maker** before opening anything. Warranties run 1–3 years.

Pool robots are mostly reliable, but they fail in predictable ways, and most are easy to fix. Work through these in order. Always check your manual first: model-specific instructions and warranty terms override anything general here. If a unit is under warranty (1 year for Dolphin Nautilus, 2–3 years for most Aiper, Wybot and Beatbot models), contact the manufacturer before opening anything.

## 1. Weak suction or slow cleaning

Almost always a full or clogged filter basket or intake. Empty and rinse it, clear the intake and check for a loose or cracked seal around the basket. Fine filters (3-micron inserts) clog faster; see [filtration microns explained](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-cleaner-filtration-microns-explained/).

## 2. Won’t climb the walls

Check the filter first, then the tracks (worn, smooth tracks lose grip), then the walls: algae and slime make surfaces slick. Brush the walls, check the water chemistry and make sure the robot has filled with water and released trapped air. Floor-only robots such as the [Seagull SE](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/aiper-seagull-se/) and [Nautilus AG](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/dolphin-nautilus-ag/) are not designed to climb at all.

## 3. Stops mid-cycle

A full basket or (cordless) a low battery. Many cordless robots park themselves at the surface when the battery gets low; for example, the Beatbot listings describe parking when it falls below about 12%. If the pool is very dirty, split the first clean into two runs. See [coverage ratings explained](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-cleaner-coverage-ratings-explained/) for why real-world runtime is shorter than the box number.

## 4. Gets stuck on steps, drains or ledges

Check the robot’s design for your pool: robots with shallow-area or platform cleaning ([Sora 30](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-30/), [Sora 10](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-10/)) handle ledges better, and skimmers like the [EcoSurfer S2](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/aiper-ecosurfer-s2/) have anti-stranding features. A robot that consistently gets stuck in the same spot may be a poor fit for that pool feature.

## 5. Cordless robot won’t charge

Dry the charging contacts, remove any debris and try another outlet. Don’t charge a wet robot. If it still won’t charge, contact the manufacturer.

## 6. Cable tangles (corded)

Corded robots twist their cables; a swivel at the cable end is designed to reduce that. Uncoil the cable, lay it flat in the sun to relax kinks and avoid tight coils in storage.

## 7. App won’t connect

Cordless robots lose Wi-Fi underwater, so live control stops when submerged. If scheduling fails, check that the robot’s connection to your home Wi-Fi works near the pool edge (many apps use 2.4 GHz) and update the firmware.

## 8. Leaves debris behind

Check the robot’s filter rating and coverage: a robot rated for a smaller pool, a 150–200 µm basket on fine dust, or a robot that doesn’t clean the waterline will leave those areas. For fine dust, look at 3-micron options; for the waterline, choose a robot that cleans it. The [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/) filters for waterline cleaning.

## 9. Floating on the surface

Trapped air. Fill and wobble it underwater to release air and make sure the basket is seated.

## When to replace instead

If tracks, brushes and baskets are fresh and the unit still misbehaves, or a cordless battery is tired, compare repair costs with a replacement; our [lifespan guide](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/how-long-do-robotic-pool-cleaners-last/) and [maintenance routine](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-cleaner-maintenance/) cover what to expect.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why won't my pool robot climb the walls?
Common causes are a full filter basket, worn or slick tracks, algae or slime on the walls, and air trapped inside the robot. Clean the filter, brush the walls, check track wear and let the robot fill with water before running.

### Why does my robotic pool cleaner stop mid-cycle?
A full basket and low battery (cordless) are the usual causes. Cordless robots with parking features also stop when the battery drops (for example below about 12% on some Beatbot models) and return to the surface.

### Why is my cordless pool robot not charging?
Check the charger and contacts for debris or moisture, make sure the robot is dry where it connects, and try a different outlet. If the robot still won't charge, contact the manufacturer, especially if it's under warranty.

### Why is my robot floating or not sinking?
Trapped air is the common cause. Let it fill with water and wobble it underwater to release air; check that the filter basket is correctly seated.
